“If only he could hear me”
The snow felt soft but solid beneath me, as I in full glee jumped and skipped through the almost 50cm high snowdrifts. I heard laughter behind me and swiftly turned my head slightly to look back at the creature walking behind me. Barking loudly, I turned forward again and ran a few meters more before I stopped. As I waited for my master to catch up with me, I could see a big, black car running up the plowed road leading to my master’s house. A hand patted the fur on my back and I looked back at whom the hand belonged to. My master smiled at me, his blue eyes shining through his light-brown hair-curls that fell in over his face as he crouched down beside me.
“He’s back.” He whispered to me and ruffled the fur on the top of my head a little. I stood still when he got up and strode over to the car. My ear’s flickered when I heard a car door open and close. With my good hearing, I could easily distinguish the usual greeting phrases; “Hey baby”, and just “Hey”.
I saw them embrace each other quickly, and then turn towards the house.
‘Will he forget me today again?’ I thought to myself and lowered my gaze slightly in pre-disappointment.
“Cinnamon!” A voice suddenly called my name and I nearly jumped up in the air from joy, knowing that my master remembered me, even though he was distracted.
“Come here girl, you can’t be out in the cold forever!” he called, and I immediately rushed towards him, barking with my nose up in the air. When I reached him and the other, I could hear my master laughing. But the man next to him didn’t look happy, angry or irritated as usually, he only look emotionless. I could already tell that this was not going to be a good night. But I decided to play happy for my master’s sake. I pressed up against his leg, looking up at him with big blue eyes, meeting an almost exact pair.
“Can we just go inside already?” the man beside my master growled, and I glared at him. My master obliged and made his way after the man who already stood on the terrace of the house. I walked close behind my master, not wanting him out of my sight.
“Why are you so uptight today Caleb?” My master asked the other man while he unlocked the front door. Caleb shrug his shoulders at the question, then walked straight in as the door was opened.
“Cinnamon…”
I looked up at my master, trying to reflect a questioning expression in my features.
“Don’t growl at him. He’s probably just had a bad day.” A hand patted me on my hand. I hadn’t even noticed I’d been growling.
As my master closed the door behind us I saw how Caleb at once raided the fridge for what I guessed was a beer.
“Caleb.” I looked around and saw my master looking at Caleb with a worried expression.
“What Michael?” Caleb snapped, glaring straight at my master as he opened the can of beer. “I’m fine, I promise.”
My master kept the worried look on his face as he took off his coat and hung it on the wall.
“If there’s something wrong I’ll tell you.” Caleb assured and turned his back to us, then headed up the stairs.
“Where are you going?” My master called after him, taking a few steps towards me, crouching down beside me to rub my back gently. No answer came from upstairs and I could see my master biting his bottom lip, as if he was nervous.
“I have to go after him.” He said and then slowly stood from his crouching position. I wanted to tell him he didn’t have to, because I knew what would happen if he did. We both knew.
But since I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t stop him. I watched as my beloved master slowly made his way up the stairs. I didn’t follow.
Later, as I heard the muffled screams and pained noises from the upper floor I felt so weak. If only I could speak, nothing would be like this. If my master had in some way been able to understand me completely, things would never have turned out this way. Caleb wouldn’t have been let into my master’s life. If I could speak, it would be as if that horrible man didn’t exist.
It was a terrifying view, seeing my master curl up into a ball on the couch after one of Caleb’s “lectures”. I never knew what the lectures were about, but I could guess it was caused from stupid reasons.
“Why do you keep holding on? You love him, that’s right. And he loves you too, you know that stupid. Stop worrying about what he thinks. He loves you. You love him.” My master mumbled, curled up in that ball next to me on the couch. I put my head in his lap and he stroked my fur as I looked up at him with my blue eyes. He didn’t even look at me, just stared into the fireplace, where a fire glowed. Something dripped in between my eyes, and as I looked at my master’s cheeks I could see streaks of tears running down them. Soon his body began to shiver and his hands reflexively crashed against his face as he tried to calm himself down. I whimpered lowly and rubbed my nose against the back of his face, drawing his attention to me. He parted his hands and looked at me, smiling at the sight of me tilting my head slightly in a pity matter.
“Oh Cinnamon, what would I do without you…” he whispered, then wrapped his arms carefully around my upper body and hugged me. I gave him a few comforting licks in his face when he let me go, and he laughed. He wiped his tears on his sleeve and gave me a bright smile.
“You want to go out for a walk?” He asked playfully. I barked in agreement and jumped off the couch, rushing to the door with my master’s laughing behind me.
